2008 has been wonderful at Wyoba. So many young people have had a chance for a “mountaintop experience with Jesus.” Volunteers have been an integral part of this season. We began with a work day to open camp, but about two weeks later than we wanted. The mountain had received so much snow during the winter and a lot of rain fell during the first part of June. Elkhorn Creek, which runs through the middle of camp, flooded and caused quite a lot of damage to the lower grounds. The road in front of the chapel washed out and deposited much of that gravel downstream on the bank side. The bridge across the creek by the dining hall was moved above five feet downstream. So our work day required a lot just to get camp open. Several churches were represented and the chapel floor and kitchen were painted, the men’s shower house received a new door and paint job, the old maintenance building was completely cleaned out and readied for demolition and the bridge got put back where it belonged.
July brought the ABC camps. Junior, Junior High, Senior High and Primary camps enriched the lives of the young people in attendance as well as the staffs of each camp. Each camp completed a work project as part of their program. The Junior and Junior High campers moved gravel and repaired the road in front of the chapel. The Senior High campers built a walkway from the road to the campfire circle. Junior campers gave an offering to begin a fund to complete the basketball court, Junior High and Senior High campers gave 75% of their offerings to “Breaking the Chains” after hearing the presentation made by Karen Van and Barbara Fuller about their trip to Thailand and the mission work being done there. The other 25% will go to Wyoba for projects to be completed.
ABWM of Wyoming bought new tables and chairs for the dining hall last year and then completed their donation with a new Bunn coffee pot and some stainless steel tables needed for the kitchen. Several of the women’s groups in individual churches donated kitchen towels, pot holders and vinyl tablecloths to aid in keeping the kitchen up to date.
The ABCRM Board met at Wyoba the first weekend in August and we had a wonderful meeting. I got to show them around the camp and answer questions about our facilities and camping program(s). The meeting was good, and a lot of work was completed.
The Wyoba Board will meet the end of September to continue work on the 501(c)3 application and self-government. This group of people is committed to Wyoba and the ministry it serves, and continues to do this as volunteers. I appreciate them and all the work they do.
Wyoba is a beautiful place where one can be away from the world and yet be very close to “civilization.” God has blessed us abundantly and I thank Him and all of the churches who contribute time and dollars to continue this ministry. We truly are “On Higher Ground!”
