Campers from across the Front Range and beyond attended camp at Quaker Ridge Camp July 19-25, 2009. We reached an all-time high attendance for the overall camp with 128 campers participating. Both the Elementary and High School camps set high attendance records with 49 Elementary campers and 41 High School campers. Wow!

Camper again enjoyed an excellent week of camp. The theme was Mad Crazy based on Mark 12:30, “Love the Lord your God, with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.” Campers were challenged to understand what it meant to love God in all aspects of their lives, from family, to school, to church, and even among their friends.

Quaker Ridge Camp offers excellent opportunities for outdoor recreation. Campers were able to ride horses, take a swim in the pool, participate in archery, climb a tree, get launched on a bungee swing, play volleyball and basketball, and climb a mountain. The Middle School campers also climbed Kindergarten Rock at the Garden of the Gods. The High School campers did a 160’ rappel at Cheyenne Cañon Park. They also went rafting on the Arkansas River.

The camp staff really grew this summer. Sylvia and Bill Hale served as the camp directors and did a lot of the planning and coordinating of camp in the months before camp and during the week of camp. Each age group had “co-coordinators” this year. Char Wells and Debbie Stanaway served as coordinators for Elementary Camp and Rev. Alvin Wilkerson was the camp pastor. Pam Mollenkamp and Chris Oldham served as Middle School Coordinators. Rev. Bill Wolfe was the camp pastor. Casey Blanchette and Christie Berglund served as the High School coordinators. Eric Berglund served as the camp pastor. Rev. Bill Johnson, Rev. Bill Prather, Dulce Garcia, and Rev. Barbara Graham also served in various ways at camp.

Flagler Baptist Church and Rev. Alvin Wilkerson are to be commended for their support of camping. Rev. Wilkerson so believes in the impact of camping that he put an advertisement in the local paper stating that if the family covered the $50 deposit, the church would help any child from Flagler attend camp. A church that averages less than 60 in worship sent 19 kids to camp. WOW! They have challenged other congregations to a competition of getting kids to attend camp. Their goal for 2010 is 29 campers from the Flagler community.
