God Always Provides
“He has shown kindness by giving you rain from heaven and crops in their seasons; he provides you with plenty of food and fills your hearts with joy.” Acts 14:7
We have all had our hard times, whether it's been something we've been thrown into thanks to no doing of our own or maybe we put ourselves into that situation. In the end we learn that no matter how hard things seem to be God always provides us with what we need to make it through.
For me it was something I put myself into not very long ago. I had only been married two months and a college graduate about the same amount of time. My new wife and I decided to pack up everything we had—which was very little—and move to Denver to start a new life for ourselves.
Now my wife believes in putting things in God's hands and throwing yourself into the unknown. For me that seemed extreme. I am an only child and very independent, I had learned to rely on myself. I've always been the type, and still am the type, to know the outcome before I ever begin the adventure. Spontaneous just doesn't fit into my vocabulary.
So, we struck out with our moving truck and unloaded it into our first apartment. Months went by, along with several interviews, and I still didn't have a job. My wife was working part-time at the mall. It was just enough money to put food on the table. The rent and all other bills were paid with the money we received from our wedding.
In a last ditch effort, late on a Sunday night, I posted my resume on a job website. Bright and early Monday morning I received a call from a local recruiter. In a whirlwind of interviewing—and feeling completely beside myself without my "plan”—I landed my first real job in the real world, in just 3 days.
When I look back on that experience I realize I learned a valuable lesson. I learned to trust what my wife was trusting in all along. That was God and the trust that God would provide for us. In the months without a job I poured over budgets and looked for work in any area possible. Meanwhile my wife kept an upbeat attitude and enjoyed the 3 months we had together without anything to do. In that last moment of what I thought was desperation, God guided me through my darkness into a wonderful job. God provided me with the recruiter who stumbled upon my resume and the company that was looking for a candidate with my skills, or lack there of.
The Bible shows us many instances when God provides for one's well being. It may not be in the most glamorous ways or according to the lifestyle we are accustomed to, but God will never give us something we can not handle. We must learn to let go of our own reliance and trust in our Lord.
Prayer: Lord, help me to let go of my reliance on myself and put my trust in you knowing you will always provide for me. Amen.
