Like Children Through the Word
“How can those who are young keep their way pure? By living according to your word. I seek you with all my heart: do not let me stray from your commands. I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you. (9-11) Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path. I have taken an oath and confirmed it, that I will follow your righteous laws. Psalms 119:9-11, 105-106
Recently I had my 9-year old nephew stay with me for a few days while his mother was out of town. When he arrived at our house, he walked in carrying a big book. He showed me the book and told me he just started reading it. It was a children’s Bible and he was very proud of it. He had already read one hundred pages.
That night he sat down in the living room and read that Bible while I sat and watched TV. He never wavered from the word of God to watch the television, play video games or watch movies. When I told him it was time for bed, he put on his pajamas and took the Bible to bed to read a little longer. The next day he took it with him to school to read during his independent reading time.
I started wondering where we as adults have lost that voracious appetite for God’s wonderful lessons taught us in the Bible. We need to experience the excitement of what is there instead of thinking of it as a chore or a requirement that is part of being a Christian. In Psalms 119:105, the scriptures tell us “Your Word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path” (NIV). We need to remember this scripture every day as we prepare to face the world and the paths we are walking.
We need to be as little children in our approach to God and His guidance through the word. We become overwhelmed by life’s worries and burdens but we need to trust completely that our burdens will be less if we read our Bibles and apply the words to our daily walk.
Let us look into our hearts and try to rekindle our passion for the word of God. If we can’t pause in our busy lives and dwell with the Lord in the word we are missing an important piece of our relationship with Him.
Prayer: Lord, thank you for the words you give us to help us through our busy, stressful lives. Help us to be hungry for your teachings so that we may seek your guidance through reading the Bible every day. Help us to understand what those words are saying to us and help us to follow the directions they are giving. Amen.
