“Do everything without complaining or arguing, so that you may become blameless and pure, children of God without fault in a crooked and depraved generation, in which you shine like stars in the universe” (Philippians 3:14-15).
Being a father of five children I am constantly being reminded of how hard it is to do chores. The sounds of “Dad, it’s too hard,” or “Why do I always have to do it?” ring throughout my house and with a smile on my face, I respond with the quote of all quotes: “Because I said so.” (I love that saying.)
As Christians we are to lead the way and set the example of who Christ has called us to be, but sometimes we find ourselves in difficult situations that may be overwhelming and we start to argue and complain about it. We may complain about how things aren’t going right at work, school, home, with friends, our church, or whatever else we can think of. So instead of leading the way we become followers of the crowd.
Paul challenges us to stop complaining or arguing about these situations in which we find ourselves and change them. We shouldn’t allow the world to dictate how we react to these things, but allow God to guide us through them. If we do this, we will shine like stars and bring light into this dark world, so that the crowd we once followed can see and turn around to follow our lead.
The next time we find ourselves in a difficult situation, saying, “God, it’s too hard,” or “Why do I always have to do it?” we might just hear God say, “Because I said so.” That’s good enough for me.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank You for every situation we find ourselves in. Difficult or easy, we praise You for them all. We pray that we would shine like the stars and shine brightly for You, so that those around us can truly see who You are through us.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
