“Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.” - Hebrews 12:1
Children are a blessing from God to every person they touch. I just finished coordinating Elementary Camp for Front Range Camping at Quaker Ridge and was touched by 25 “blessings” every day of this past week.
The theme of the week was the “Amazing Race,” based on Hebrews 12:1-3. Alvin Wilkerson, from First Baptist Church of Flagler, CO was the pastor. He taught the children, and leaders, that when they needed help in this “amazing race,” they should stop and pray “Help me Jesus!” The children at camp used that phrase over and over again throughout the week. They used it on our 3 hour hike, when they were afraid of bears, and when they just needed a little encouragement. The counselors used it often to keep their spirits up and help them with encouragement. I used it when I was feeling very overwhelmed with the responsibility of coordinating.
“Help me Jesus” was always on my mind. I also kept reminding myself of the Matthew 19:14 passage throughout the week. “Jesus said, ‘Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.’” Jesus called the children to him, and who was I to “hinder them” from coming to him. I reminded myself that those children were called by God to be there, and I was called to show them how to live and walk with God.
Children of that age, 2nd through 5th graders, do not like to be quiet, but sometimes we just needed them to be quiet. One evening the boys of the group were literally just running in circles yelling because they were so hyper and excited. “Help me Jesus” came out of my mouth. I raised my hand to signal to the kids to be quiet and prayed to the Lord that I could be a Godly example to these children. They calmed, we resumed what we were doing, and I remained in control with the help of God.
God helped me pass this specific place in my race. These “blessings” touched me and left a mark on my race path. I can only hope that my example, and the example of their group leaders, left a mark on their paths too.
My prayer is that each one of you can run this race with the same faithfulness that each one of those children has. Call out to Jesus when you need help. Do not be afraid to ask for help. That is what Jesus was sent for.
Prayer: Lord, please help us to run this race of life. We know that it is hard to ask for help, but we need it. We pray that our lives can reflect you and the way you ask us to live. Thank you for all you do for us. In your precious name, Amen.
