“A woman giving birth to a child has pain because her time has come; but when her baby is born she forgets the anguish because of her joy that a child is born into the world. So with you: Now is your time of grief, but I will see you again and you will rejoice, and no one will take away your joy.” – John 16:21-22
December 25 is the day we celebrate the birth of Jesus the Christ. All the stories and songs are about the miraculous birth, but nothing talks of the pain the mother Mary went through to give the world this Amazing Blessing.
Mary was an unwed pregnant teenager. Joseph, her betrothed, could have had her stoned to death, but he decided that God’s work was to be done. Mary had to endure shame and resentment from many around her to bear this child. She also had to go through childbirth with just her husband there to help her.
If you have witnessed a child being born you know the pain that a woman goes through to give birth to a child. However, just like Jesus spoke of in John 16:21, a woman forgets about the pain of childbirth once that baby is in her arms.
I had 4 weeks of agonizing patience, then the worst 3 months of my life when my boys were in the neonatal intensive care unit after they were born. My pain turned to extreme joy as soon as I got my boys home and got to hold them in my arms in their own home. All the pain I endured faded away, and now all I have is joy.
Mary’s pain faded away once she held that baby boy in her arms. She felt the joy of having that miraculous life in her little hands. She knew that God had given her this son and that he would do great things. He saved the world from grief and turned all that grief into Joy!
Joy to the World and Peace on Earth! The Lord has come to the world!
