“Learn to do good; seek justice, rescue the oppressed, defend the orphan, plead for the widow.” - Isaiah 1:17
“He has told you, O mortal, what is good; and what does the LORD require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?” - Micah 6:8
“Don’t be misled—you cannot mock the justice of God. You will always harvest what you plant.” - Galatians 6:7
Justice. There are over 150 references pertaining to justice in God’s word. These scriptures reference both God’s justice and His call for His people to bring His justice into the community.
Our church celebrated Black History Month last month. I am ashamed to write that I have never been part of a church that celebrated these milestones of our nation’s history before joining Old Landmark Ministries. We (Caucasians) have a tendency to view this as an African-American observance. However, the Lord showed me, last month, that this is EVERYONE’S observance.
As a part of our church’s observance of Black History Month many historical figures were brought to life in our church. It was a privilege to experience these African-American pioneers and leaders of many fields. It was my privilege and learning experience to portray Viola Liuzzo. She was a white housewife from Detroit who understood that freedom from oppression was everyone’s fight. She was part of the voter rights marches in Alabama in March 1965. While in Alabama, she was killed by Klansmen who hated the whites helping the African-American obtain the right to vote even more than they hated the African-Americans seeking this right.
My prayer is that next year, Black History Month will be observed more widely. Justice is not just a human value it is also a Godly principle. As one president stated many decades ago, “if a man is being held in the gutter there’s another one in the gutter holding him there.”
Justice is something all of us can celebrate!
“But let justice roll down like waters, and righteousness like an ever-flowing stream.” - Amos 5:24
