As part of a special focus this year on youth, New Hope Baptist Church in Denver, CO sponsored a youth mission to our nation’s capitol, July 7-11, 2005. Twelve youth along with six youth counselors embarked on this trip aimed at expanding the boundaries of these youth. For a good number of the youth, this trip marked the first time they had been on a plane, outside of Colorado, or in the nation’s capitol. Members of New Hope and the Majestic Praise Choir also participated in the trip as guests of Florida Avenue Baptist Church which was celebrating their 93rd church anniversary.
The trip had special meaning to Pastor James Peters because he was ordained as a minister 50 years ago at Florida Avenue Baptist Church. This not only gave the youth a chance to participate in a historic moment in their pastor’s life, but they also gained a greater understanding and deepened sense of closeness with their pastor. "It was beautiful to see how our pastor is respected nationwide and the admiration given to him wherever he goes," said Jessica James.

The fellowship with the youth of Florida Avenue Baptist Church made the trip worthwhile. The
two youth groups were able to experience D.C. together and share their hopes and experiences
with one another. This served to provide uplift and support that transcended the miles even after
the trip ended. A bond was developed between the two groups that will be enhanced with time."The time we spent with Florida Avenue Baptist Church made me reflect and appreciate our
youth group and the opportunities it provides,"said Jayla James.
The two groups took tours of the new World War II Memorial, the Lincoln Memorial, the Vietnam Memorial, and of course a local area mall. They also spent a fun night out together at the ESPNZone in downtown Washington. In addition to these sites, the youth also had a chance to tour the U.S. Capitol Building and the Bureau of Engraving and Printing with a stop in front of the White House.

Rev. Peters preached at the 93rd Church Anniversary service at Florida Avenue on Sunday, July
10th which included a special presentation marking the 50th anniversary of his ordination. He was also presented a 93rd Church Anniversary Collage featuring prominent members over the
church’s history. Rev. Peters’ mother and grandmother were active members of the church’s
congregation for many years. The Majestic Praise Choir ministered through song at an afternoon
musical along with Florida Avenue’s Adoration Ensemble. In addition to these spiritual events,
the youth also participated in multiple Bible studies during the trip.
Thanks to generous individual sponsors, the youth were allowed the opportunity to partake in this uplifting, life-changing journey and we are truly grateful. As Mandisa Gunnells stated, "It was the most exciting, warm, and spiritual experience any one could have." |
